Sheet Metal File Formats and Features

black bracket part sample showing assembled sheet metal after bending

When your next project needs thin, flat pieces of metal in precise shapes and sizes, consider versatile sheet metal. Sheet metal is used in many metalworking projects and countless everyday objects are fabricated from it.

Hansen Industries can manufacture your parts created quickly. Below are our design file specifications and recommendations, however we are able to help with deisgn and material specification if you don't have a drawing or completed part design.

Design File Specifications

We accept SolidWorks files that use the Microsoft Structured Storage file format. This produces a file with various embedded files within each SLDDRW (drawing files), SLDPRT (part files), LDASM (assembly files) file, including preview bitmaps and metadata sub-files. We also work with STEP, IGES, and Dxf formats.

Wall Thickness

Sheet metal parts require that the design contain a uniform thickness because the parts are manufactured from a single sheet of metal. At Hansen Industries, we are able to cut sheet metal up to 3/8" thick for aluminum and stainless steel, and 3/4" thick in steel.

Bends

If your design contains any bends, Hansen holds a +/- 1 degree tolerance on all bend angles. Our preferred bend radius is 0.032" but other standard bend radii is available but may add additional costs. These include:

  • 0.020"
  • 0.039"
  • 0.0125"
  • 0.250"
  • 0.375"
  • 0.500"
  • 0.750"
  • 1.000"

If you have any questions about designing or preparing your files for your next sheet metal project, please contact Hansen Industries.
