Why we use waterjet cutting for precision cuts

Samples of waterjet components with varying quality cuts

Waterjet cutting for metal uses a high pressure jet of water and sand (which exits the mixing tube at roughly the speed of sound) to make precision cuts. It leaves no blurs or Heat Affected Zones (HAZ).

Our waterjet cutting machines can cut a wide range of metal and non-metal materials including hardened tool steel, aluminum, carbon fibre, ceramic, Inconel and composites, marble, granite, glass, tile, and stone. Our waterjet cutting machines can even cut pieces of hard titanium up to 10 inches thick.

Waterjet Cutting Capabilities

  • Max cutting envelope: 60 x 120 inches and 55 x 100 inches
  • Water pressure: 50,000 PSI
  • Tolerance/Accuracy: within +/- 0.003 Inches
  • Speed: 180 inches per minute standard

Quotation Process

We have 5 different quality levels when cutting with our Omax Water-Jet machine. They range from 1 (fastest cutting with lower edge quality) to 5 (slower cutting, with best edge quality). Our water-jet cutting quotes are usually based on cutting level 3, but bear in mind some materials can only be cut within certain levels. There can be a 5x cost difference between levels but your Hansen Industries design rep can help you determine the best cut for your project and budget.
