What is the best metal cutting process for my project?

As you probably noticed, there are many techniques and tools to cut sheet metal. Here is a brief guide to understanding which sheet metal cutting process is best for each type of cut and material.

CNC Punching: This is ideal when your project has many holes (like electronic chassis often have) and is ideal because of it’s punching speed, roundness of the holes, and ability to form features and tap holes.

Laser Cutting: This is ideal when you need to cut curves and long cut lines. It’s also the fastest cutting method. Because of its flying optics laser, scratches are minimized and it can eliminate micro-joints. For cutting steel, laser cut with oxygen assist gas is recommended to reduce scaling on the edges that could interfere with welding.

Waterjet Cutting: This is ideal when your sheet metal thickness exceeds half an inch as it gives you superior edge quality. Waterjet cutting also allows for stacking of materials to cut more at one time, and because it’s cold-pressed it helps you weld and powdercoat without problems. Copper is often cut using a waterjet machine because it is too reflective to cut with lasers.

Metal Stamping: This is ideal for cutting pieces of 1000 or more, or cutting patterns that repeat often. It’s known for reducing part cost too.

EDM: This is ideal when you need cuts with high precision, but is also the most expensive.
